Process to surrender a dog

Fill in the surrender form

Complete our surrender application form below to give us detailed information about your dog, and to help us understand your dog’s needs so we can find the most suitable placement.

Approval

Once we review your application, we will notify you if your dog is approved for surrender. Approval depends on the availability of suitable foster carers and the specific needs of your dog.

Foster carer placement

If approved, your dog will be placed with the first available and suitable foster carer. Our carers are experienced and dedicated to providing a safe and loving environment for your dog.

Meet and greets

We arrange meet and greets with potential adopters to find the best match for your dog. This process ensures that your dog is placed in a loving forever home.

Adoption

Once a suitable adopter is found, your dog will be adopted into their new home. We provide support throughout the transition to ensure a smooth process for both the dog and the new owner.

Post adoption

It is in the best interests of your dog to let him/her settle into the new home and bond with the new owner. For that reason it is best not to visit after adoption. We do try to send you photos and news about how the dog is settling in.

Do dogs get put down?

At Scruffer Lovers, we are pro-life and consider euthanasia only in extreme cases where a dog’s behavioural or medical issues severely affect their quality of life. Our priority is to explore all other avenues of training, medication, and therapy first.

What happens if I change my mind?

If you change your mind before the adoption process is complete, you can reclaim your dog. However, once the dog is adopted, they legally belong to the new owner.

How long does the process take?

The length of the process can vary depending on the availability of foster carers and the specific needs of your dog. We aim to make the transition as smooth and quick as possible.
